The Lactobacillus johnsonii strain XZ17, was isolated from the lung of a healthy C57BL/6J mouse. Intranasal administration of this strain, whether live or heat-inactivated, has been shown to alleviate pulmonary fibrosis in syngeneic bone marrow-transplanted recipient mice infected with murine gammaherpesvirus 68 (MHV-68).
