In vitro expression profiles of Lactobacillus johnsonii NCC533 in MRS

(Submitter supplied) Work with pathogens like Vibrio cholerae has shown major differences between gene expression in bacteria grown in vitro and in vivo. To explore this subject for commensals, we investigated the transcription of the Lactobacillus johnsonii NCC533 genome during in vitro using the microarray technology. In broth growth, 537, 626 and 277 of the 1756 tested genes were expressed during exponential, “adaptation” (early stationary phase) and stationary phase, respectively. more...

Comparison of conventional and germ-free gastrointestinal tract

(Submitter supplied) Whole tissues corresponding to the corpus, jejunum, descending colon and rectum were dissected from each mouse, washed with ice-cold PBS, placed into 2ml of RNA-later and flash-frozen in liquid nitrogen. The corpus was defined as the part of the stomach different from the antrum (distinguished by a difference in colour). The jejunum was defined as the tissue between the first 4 cm and the last 2 cm of the small intestinal tube. more...

Effect of Amoxicillin on the small intestine and colon of rats

(Submitter supplied) Whole tissues corresponding to the proximal and distal small intestine and to the colon were dissected from each rat, washed with ice-cold saline solution and immediately frozen in liquid nitrogen. Rats were either control or treated with Amoxicillin (100mg/kg/day). Small intestine was divided in two identical length considered as the proximal and distal part. In each intestinal part 1 cm of tissue was taken in the middle of this part to perform the RNA extraction and then the GeneArray analysis. more...

Expression data from brain tissue of Rattus norvegicus treated with D-Serine

(Submitter supplied) d-serine is naturally present throughout the human body. It is also used as add-on therapy for treatment-refractory schizophrenia. d-Serine interacts with the strychnine-insensitive glycine binding site of NMDA receptor, and this interaction could lead to potentially toxic activity (i.e., excitotoxicity) in brain tissue. The transcriptomic changes that occur in the brain after d-serine exposure have not been fully explored. more...

Short-term growth hormone treatment on the liver and muscle transcriptome in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

(Submitter supplied) Although studies have established that exogenous growth hormone (GH) treatment stimulates growth in fish, its effects on target tissue gene expression are not well characterized. We assessed the effects Posilac® (Monsanto Co., St. Louis, MO), a recombinant bovine somatotropin, on tissue transcript levels. Transcript abundance was measure in liver and muscle using the GRASP 16 K cDNA microarray. A selection of the genes identified as altered with the microarray, and also transcripts for insulin-like growth factors, growth hormone receptors (GHR) and myostatins were measured by realtime PCR in the liver, muscle, brain, kidney, intestine, stomach, gill and heart. more...

Transcriptional profiling and comparative genomic analysis of an invasive and non-invasive strain of Candida albicans

(Submitter supplied) Invasion of host tissue by the human fungal pathogen, Candida albicans is an important step during many forms of candidosis. However, not all C. albicans strains possess the same invasive and virulence properties. It is known for example that the two clinical isolates SC5314 and ATCC10231 differ in their ability to invade into host tissue and to cause infections. Strain SC5314 is invasive whereas strain ATCC10231 is non-invasive and strongly attenuated in virulence as compared to SC5314. more...

Maltose utilization by Lactobacillus reuteri 100-23

(Submitter supplied) Commensal (symbiont) bacteria form communities in various regions of the bodies of vertebrates. Phylogenetic analysis of gut communities is advanced, but the relationships, especially at the trophic level, between commensals that share gut habitats of monogastric animals have not been investigated to any extent. Inactivation of the Lactobacillus reuteri 100-23 ureC gene affects in vitro acid tolerance, and impairs ecological fitness in vivo

(Submitter supplied) Lactobacillus reuteri 100-23 is an autochthonous inhabitant of the rodent gastrointestinal system that adheres to the non-secretory epithelium of the forestomach and forms biofilms. Microarray analysis of the expression profile of L. reuteri 100-23 cells harvested from the stomach of ex-Lactobacillus-free mice, compared to those of L. reuteri 100-23 in laboratory culture, revealed an in vivo upregulation of a urease gene cluster by greater than 50-fold. more...
